(The last winter-knitting story.)
I've told you the story of The Too-Small Hat. (I've told it so many times I'm not linking back to it again.) Y'all will be happy to hear that I have solved the problem:
This hat was a bit of a challenge. As I was making the hat, I had quite a lot of hair, which I wore in one of those massive clips at the back of my head. So the hat needed to not only accommodate (I never know how to spell that word) my huge head, but my huge hairstyle as well. I started the hat at the brim, a nice 2x2 rib to keep the air out. And then I knit, and knit some more, until I thought I had enough to finish the hat.
No.
So I took out all the decreases and knit, and knit some more, until I thought I had enough to finish the hat.
Still no.
However, at this point, I was getting worried about running out of yarn, because I am not a good judge of exactly how much more yarn one will need for x rows of y decreases. So instead of taking out all the decreases, I decided to knit down from the bottom.
Have you ever tried to knit ribbing down? It doesn't work. The numbers don't match up. And so it was time to remove the ribbing.
Have you ever tried to take out ribbing?
Yes, but from the bottom?
It involves surgery:
And then it involves the ripping. Which is not straightforward, oh no, but requires detangling the yarn from the stitches above it.
I was very glad to be done with the ripping.
Once all that was done, it was straightforward. (I love how you can knit up and down from the same row & no one will ever know. (If you're good enough.)(Which I am almost-but-not-quite.)) So now I have a Very Large Floppy hat.
But at least it's not too small.
